Back in 2013, I started my internship in an advertising agency in Singapore and I had an awesome learning experience throughout that six months. What was even better was that I was offered a full-time position as a social media executive in that same digital agency.
During my time in that agency, I’ve learnt a lot. I know, it sounds like an ordinary statement but that’s the truth - I did learn a lot. Here are three things I’ve learnt during my time working for one of the best digital agencies!
1. Be nice
Being mean and being firm are two different things. If it was one thing I’ve learnt, it was that you can be nice and firm at the same time. Just because you are having a hard time doesn’t mean others are having it easy too. Plus, being mean to your creatives doesn’t get your job done faster. It just makes them mad and perhaps even hate you a little. Maintaining good relations with your colleagues is so crucial… because these are people you probably face longer than your parents every day.
2. Accept others’ opinions
Yeah, we all think our work is good. But that doesn’t mean we can’t improve on it. Just because you think you are the “expert” in a field, it doesn’t mean that the suits or creatives can’t add valuable input to your work. Because I was really young with near zero experience when I started working, I found that the advice from the seniors were really useful. In fact, there were many times my ideas were taken up a notch, thanks to tips from other people in the company. Always listen to what others have to say!
3. Stay ahead of your deadlines
When they told you that the working hours were 9 to 5… they lied. There were a couple of times I went back at midnight, thanks to never-ending campaigns and rushed deadlines. From managing clients to writing briefs to coming up with content for social media every so often, it was a challenge to juggle the work-life balance initially. However, as more time passed, I told myself that there is only so much work I can complete each day. The truth is we are all humans and we need to rest. After all, when you are tired, you tend to miss out on tiny details that may turn out to be real important. Simply work till the best you can for the day, go back home to recharge and come back the next day energised to continue your work. Of course, do not use it as an excuse to procrastinate and always stay ahead of your timeline!
No doubt, it was great to be given the opportunity to work for Germs Digital. I managed to work on many campaigns and got to meet legendary humans. The entire experience was nothing short of amazing and plus, it gave me a glimpse of my future work life. They say you learn as you go and I guess that's true because there are a lot of things out that waiting to be explored which you'd never know until you've tried!
